Model UN

Model United Nations (Model UN or MUN), is an educational simulation, in which students participate as delegates, placed in committees and assigned countries, discussing global issues as in a real UN conference.

  • It is a fun and easy way of learning about global issues.

  • You develop leadership skills. MUN is an exercise of practicing research, public speaking and teamwork.

  • You may use MUN experience to your advantage, since high schools and colleges are looking for leaders, your participation as delegate, moderator or even secretariat member, can set a good example of how you have developed this skill.

Before the simulation

      1.Attitude

  • Be cordial.

  • Be respectful with everyone in the committee.

  • Avoid doing things that may disturb the members of the committee like making funny noises or paying.

  • Be punctual to all sessions.

  • You are not allowed to take naps during the sessions. Remember this is a formal event.

       2. You must

  • Be attentive during the simulation in case that a member of the committee needs your help.

  • Follow the directions that the chair or moderator from the committee you are in gives you.

  • Pay attention to what the chair indicates you to do. Sometimes, you may be asked to go out of the room and ask for something from one of the secretariat members.

  • Read carefully to whom are the notes you are delivering. If the delegate did not wrote the country’s name, ask him to write it.

      3. Keep in mind

  • Do not feel intimidated or afraid of neither the chair nor the delegates.

  • Remember that it is better for you to pay attention to the simulations because next year you’ll be sitting on a chair being a delegate just like they are now.

  • If you want to go to the restroom, you’ll need to ask for permission to the moderator or chair from the committee you were assigned.

During the simulation

  • You will be assigned to a committee in which you will be helping during the simulation.

  • You will be sitting in a chair waiting for the delegates or the chair to ask for you help.

  • If you are doubting about something you have to do during the simulation, this is the right time for you to ask. You may ask the moderator or chair from the committee or to one of the Secretariat members.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Be attentive.

  • If you notice any kind of strange situation or attitude in the committee you are in, report it immediately to the moderator.

  • If a delegate or the chair raises their hand with a note on it, stand up, grab it, and deliver it to the country that is written in the note.

  • *If a note goes from one delegate to another, it is important that first you have to give it to the chair and if he/she approves the message then you can give it to the country whose name is written on the paper.

  • Respect the members of the committee you are in.

  • Stay quiet during the simulations. (Keep in mind that delegates need absolute concentration.)
